{"id":2200,"date":"2026-01-15T09:40:25","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T09:40:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.safetyphoto.co.uk\/safety_news\/?p=2200"},"modified":"2026-01-15T09:40:25","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T09:40:25","slug":"health-and-safety-executive-inspecting-chiropractors-to-assess-radiation-compliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.safetyphoto.co.uk\/safety_news\/?p=2200","title":{"rendered":"Health and Safety Executive inspecting chiropractors to assess radiation compliance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>HSE\u00a0inspecting\u00a0compliance under Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Regulator launches video explaining inspection guidance.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Inspections taking place across\u00a0Great Britain.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is conducting an inspection campaign targeting chiropractors who use radiation generators.<\/p>\n<p>The regulator\u2019s inspections will assess dutyholders\u2019 compliance with the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17), which protect employees and other persons from occupational radiation exposure.<\/p>\n<p><span>To\u00a0help\u00a0dutyholders\u00a0understand the requirements of an inspection, the HSE has created\u00a0an\u00a0online\u00a0video outlining the expectations of the visit and the areas inspectors will be assessing compliance\u00a0on, including:<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>management of radiation protection<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>radiation risk assessment<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>engineering controls and maintenance<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>contingency plans<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>training records<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>designation and monitoring of controlled areas<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>local rules and radiation protection supervisors<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>personal dosimetry<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>All employers with staff operating radiation generators must register with HSE through the online RADAN system.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Duncan Smith,\u00a0Head of\u00a0the Health and Safety Executive\u2019s\u00a0Health Unit, said: \u201cThe use of radiology\u00a0and\u00a0radiography\u00a0by chiropractors,\u00a0means that medical ionising radiation is\u00a0employed\u00a0widely\u00a0across the industry. To ensure\u00a0the safety of staff and members of the public\u202fwe will be conducting inspections throughout January until the end of March.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOur\u00a0inspections\u00a0will examine construction, warning devices, safety\u00a0features\u00a0and any mobile shielding used.\u00a0Employers should prepare relevant records,\u00a0Radiation Protection Adviser\u00a0reports, critical examination\u00a0reports\u00a0and training certificates for review, while operators may be asked to\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0equipment and warning systems.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe understand that many\u00a0dutyholders\u00a0will not have received a visit from HSE before, so to help explain the process we have created a new video explaining\u00a0our expectations and the\u00a0employer\u2019s\u00a0obligations.\u201d<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>HSE\u2019s video on what to expect from an inspection:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<div class=\"v6-youtube-embed\"><\/div>\n<p><span>Ahead of an inspection\u00a0HSE inspectors will contact registered employers in advance to arrange a mutually convenient inspection time\u00a0and to provide documentation ahead of the visit. This ensures the radiation responsible person is present, equipment is available for inspection, and disruption to services is minimised\u00a0and inspectors\u00a0have had the chance to\u00a0review documents before arriving on site.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Following\u00a0an\u00a0inspection, HSE will provide a summary of compliance standards found, any material breaches\u00a0identified, and whether enforcement action will be taken.
