{"id":2126,"date":"2025-10-07T13:41:05","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T13:41:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.safetyphoto.co.uk\/safety_news\/?p=2126"},"modified":"2025-10-07T13:41:05","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T13:41:05","slug":"company-fined-after-much-loved-family-man-killed-by-reversing-hgv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.safetyphoto.co.uk\/safety_news\/?p=2126","title":{"rendered":"Company fined after much loved family man killed by reversing HGV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several failings identified during investigation.<br \/>\nMan described as \u2018my everything\u2019 by his daughter.<br \/>\nHSE guidance is available.<\/p>\n<p>A manufacturing company has been fined \u00a3240,000 after a grandfather was killed by a reversing HGV in Birmingham.<\/p>\n<p>David Saint \u2013 described as \u2018my everything\u2019 by his daughter \u2013 worked as an engineering manager at Northwood Consumer Limited, at its site in Electra Park, Electric Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>The 61-year-old, from Spalding in Lincolnshire, was walking across the service road on the shared industrial estate on 19 October 2023, when the reversing HGV collided with him.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Saint leaves behind his wife, Cassandra, his children Samantha and Adam, his grandchildren, Jake and Ava, as well as his father, Terry, and siblings, Paul, Kim and Michael.<\/p>\n<p>        David Saint was killed by a reversing HGV<\/p>\n<p>His daughter, Samantha, said: \u201cHe was my everything, there was nothing he wasn\u2019t involved in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy life now consists of \u2018what would dad do?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think of him and miss him every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that Northwood Consumer Limited failed to:<\/p>\n<p>Undertake a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks associated with workplace transport.<br \/>\nAddress the movement of HGVs in its site rules;<br \/>\nEliminate, as far as possible, the need for HGVs to reverse;<br \/>\nProvide any aids or assistance to HGVs that had to be reversed;<br \/>\nDisplay any signage to warn of the hazards arising from the movement of HGVs; and<br \/>\nControl when HGVs would access the site.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/pubns\/books\/hsg136.htm\">HSE guidance<\/a> provides advice for employers on what they need to do to comply with the law and reduce risk. The guide is also useful for managers, supervisors, employees and their safety representatives, as well as contractors, vehicle operators and other organisations concerned with workplace transport safety.<\/p>\n<p>        A police drone captured this image of the aftermath of the incident<\/p>\n<p>Mr Saint\u2019s son Adam added: \u201cI just miss my dad being there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI miss the conversations that we used to have and his guidance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just miss everything about him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Northwood Consumer Limited of \u00a0Northwood House, Stafford Park 10, Telford, pleaded guilty to breaching Sections 2(1) and 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. The company was fined \u00a3240,000 and ordered to pay \u00a36,917 in costs at Birmingham Magistrates Court on 6 October 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Lead HSE inspector Charlie Rowe said: \u201cThis is a tragic and shocking case that has devastated Mr Saint\u2019s family, friends and loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPedestrians being struck by moving vehicles remains a leading cause of workplace fatalities in Great Britain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of these incidents involve the reversal of vehicles with poor visibility, such as HGVs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe HSE will continue to take appropriate enforcement action where employers fail to implement reasonably practicable measures to keep people safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy thoughts remain with all of David\u2019s family and friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This prosecution was brought by HSE enforcement lawyer Edward Parton and supported by senior paralegal manager Sarah Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Further information:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/?utm_source=press.hse.gov.uk&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=notes-to-editors\">The Health and Safety Executive<\/a>\u00a0(HSE) is Britain\u2019s national regulator for workplace health and safety.
