Health and Safety in the workplace is a key area where the Government has cut funding by 35%. Recent statistics show that deaths in the workplace have increased in the Northwest in the last year, and experts say they anticipate more incidents as more and more people come back to work after the recession. They think workplaces are getting more “risky” and health and safety procedures are becoming slack. Health and safety audits should be carried out regularly and thoroughly, and health and safety companies can help you with this.

Here are the top three reasons why health and safety needs to be a priority in your workplace:

  1. Financial costs. If someone has a fall from trailing cables, or are given an electric shock from an old piece of equipment, the employee may be likely to make a claim against your company. The cost of this could run into the thousands, as cases are often lengthy and require legal assistance or representation in court. Even if your employee doesn’t make a claim against you, you still might lose out financially. A staff member might be sick for months and you will have to pay their sick leave as well as their cover if you need to replace that person in their absence.
  1. Reputation. Your reputation as an employer needs to be good. Health and safety consultants will say that a good reputation encourages more employees into your company as well as making clients more likely to want to work with you in business. A tarnished name would not be able to recover easily in the turbulent climate of today’s market! Any negative press could be detrimental for your business as well as your name in general.
  1. Staff morale. Having a happy workforce is key to success in whatever the size of an organisation. You will be more likely to have employees want to work harder for you, more hours for you, or do their job more thoroughly, if you show your support and care for them as individual workers in your business. If someone has had an accident in your workplace and you decide to not rectify the hazard or show any support for the injured employee, other staff members will not react well to your lack of care as an employer. Staff morale is therefore very important.
