Jail sentence for test impersonator

Balbir Singh was paid to take tests for other people

A man who impersonated theory and practical driving test candidates has been sent to prison for 20 months following a joint investigation by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) and Suffolk Police.

On Wednesday (1 September) Balbir Singh, 41, from Croydon appeared at Ipswich Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to 16 offences of fraud by false representation and identity offences, and asked for a further 12 offences to be taken into consideration.

Andy Rice, head of the DSA’s fraud and integrity team said:

“Driving test impersonation is a serious offence which puts law abiding road users at risk.

“Cases such as this are rare but we investigate all suspected incidents and work closely with the Police to make sure that those responsible are brought to justice.

“We welcome today’s sentence which shows that those found guilty of driving test fraud will be punished by the courts.”

Singh was arrested at Ipswich Driving Test Centre in June, but committed offences around the country. An application has been made to seize £1,120 in cash, found in his car, as the proceeds of crime. His Volkswagen Golf was also retained by the police as it was used in the commission of a crime.

Brutal video aimed at saving lives in construction zones

The video is brutal: a young woman lying unconscious, face badly bruised, arms covered in dressings, tubes into her mouth, neck and body immobilized, her hospital bed surrounded by all the equipment and monitors that say what you are viewing is a matter of life and death.

That was Jennifer Beauregard, aged 23, flag person, hit at 6:50 a.m., Sept. 25, 2009, in Delta by the inattentive driver of an SUV who was texting and driving at the same time.

The impact knocked her out of her boots, and out of life as she knew it.

It sent her 15 feet in the air and she landed on her head 100 feet away from where she had stood with a traffic sign.

Where have Bangalore’s safety engineers gone? – Bangalore – DNA

Safety engineers are absconding. Lifting equipment are unscientific and barricades are not in place at certain areas.

In a hurry to complete works on time, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is throwing all safety precautions to the winds, leading to accidents, said experts following the second Metro crane accident in five days.

Engineering experts said safety aspects are being compromised at Metro construction sites in Bangalore, and though the movement of cranes and heavy machinery should ideally be at night, it is being carried out in the daytime with an eye on completing the project without further delays.

SMEs warned to focus on safety after worker awarded $1.26 million from Gary Morgan-owned company – Business news, business advice and information for Australian SMEs | SmartCompany

The awarding of $1.26 million to a former employee of a company owned by pollster Gary Morgan who suffered a serious injury to his foot should serve as a warning to SMEs to make occupational health and safety a key part of their culture, an expert has warned.

The Supreme Court of Victoria found Linton Shirreff, who was employed by Elazac to supervise the refurbishment of a building in the Melbourne CBD, is now owed $1.26 million after he sustained a serious foot injury in an elevator shaft in 2002. Shirreff has subsequently been advised to amputate the foot.

Alberta employment minister vows ‘hammer’ will come down on workplace safety violators

CALGARY – Alberta Employment Minister Thomas Lukaszuk said today the levying of workplace safety charges in the death of an employee at an oilsands tailings pond shows the province is willing to get tough with alleged violators.

“The hammer will come down, and as you can see, charges were laid,” the minister said in Calgary today. “The system works.”

The province, however, has faced staunch criticism over its enforcement and prosecution record.
