Salon dismay as alleyway rubbish returns -Hastings and St. Leonards Observer

IT’S ALL a load of rubbish and we’re fed-up with it, say two Bexhill hair studio directors subjected to working alongside an alley strewn with refuse.

Michele Meyer and Shelly Ellis of MJM hair studio, Western Road, say despite regularly complaining to Rother District Council (RDC) rubbish in the alley adjoining their premises is out of control.

Fire service kept busy as workers suffer freak accidents – nailed to plank and hand trapped in mixer – | Bedfordshire Newspaper Online

A man had to be freed from a cement mixer after his hand became trapped – one of two industrial accidents across the county on the same day.
A man in his forties nailed his leg to a plank of wood with a nail gun at 9.20pm the same night.
He was able to release himself from the wood before crews arrived and he was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Department of Labor building closed after asbestos found – no one knew it was there! NWCN.com Washington

BOISE — The Idaho Department of Labor’s administration building is closed until further notice because of asbestos.
Spokesman Bob Fick says work crews were renovating the geothermal system when they ran into some asbestos Thursday night at the downtown Boise building.  He says no one knew it was there.

$20K fine in forklift driver’s death | Pacific Daily News | guampdn.com

A Harmon company was fined nearly $20,000 for safety violations after a forklift driver was killed in an accident last November.GM Logistics, a company that collects scrap for recycling, was cited for five serious violations and one “other than serious” violation, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Shoddy repairs blamed for elevator death at Crockett Hotel – San Antonio Express-News

Late inspections and faulty maintenance of an elevator brake at the Crockett Hotel were the likely reasons why a housekeeper fell to her death in an elevator shaft last year, according to a scathing government report released late Wednesday.

The hotel had contracted Otis Elevator Co. to provide regular maintenance for the elevator. The company also manufactured it.

5 dead in N China mine fire >> chinadaily.com.cn

SHIJIAZHUANG – A coal mine fire killed five people in North China’s Hebei province Friday morning, according to the Hebei Administration of Work Safety.
The accident occurred in the Jiazhuang Coal Mine in Jingxing county. A preliminary investigation indicated that seven miners were working underground when the mine’s air compressor caught fire, the administration said.

Close shave for people as fire breaks out in building – The Times of India

PATNA: Panic prevailed among the residents of multi-storied Capitol Tower Block-B on Frazer Road after a fire broke out in the electric cables of the building due to short circuit on Friday afternoon. The Tower has several residential flats, restaurant and offices of different companies. At around 3.05 pm, smoke started billowing out from the first floor of the apartment as the electric cables caught fire. Since the building is located in prime locality, a large number of people assembled outside the building. Soon, the fire spread to the electric duct up to the fourth floor of the building. A few persons managed to come out of the building immediately while several families, particularly children, were trapped in the apartment. The employees of the offices downed their shutters.

Small fire snuffed out in Aultman Hospital elevator shaft – Canton, OH – CantonRep.com

CANTON —

Traffic was being diverted from Aultman Hospital’s parking deck and entrance off of Bedford Avenue SW on Friday afternoon after an elevator motor malfunctioned.
Fire Chief Stephen Rich said the department brought nine units to the scene after smoke was detected in an elevator shaft because a fire at the hospital could be very serious.

Martin McColls Ltd – £25k fine for health and safety breaches | This is Cornwall

A CHAIN of newsagents with stores across Cornwall has been fined £25,000 for health and safety offences at Bodmin Magistrates’ Court.
Appearing on May 1, Martin McColls Ltd pleaded guilty to 12 serious offences and was also ordered to pay £14,299 towards Cornwall Council’s legal costs.
